Haunt your home with salvaged scares for an authentically terrifying Halloween!

1. Item #655777: The Second Use Chainsaw Massacre

At only $20, this guy is ready to be smothered with fake blood and placed in a creepy (but safe and out of children’s reach) spot. Trick-or-treaters beware!

2. Item #656675: Justice is Served

What’s heavier, a human skull or a bucket of candy? We’ll let this scale decide.

3. Item #652185: Witch’s Brew

This massive cauldron is as authentic as it is heavy (which is to say, VERY). When you’re done using it to scare neighbors, it’ll make a great planter, baby bath, etc.

4+5. Items #634983 + #656287: Headless Horsemen (or Zombies, or Ghosts…)

Nothing says “Halloween decor” like a fake body dressed to impress (or frighten). Bury halfway in your yard, separate into pieces, use later in the year as Santa’s elves, the possibilities are endless.

*Wishing you the spookiest and most mischievous of Halloweens*

Inspiration Gallery: Industrial Storage https://www.seconduse.com/2018/05/inspiration-gallery-industrial-storage/ Wed, 30 May 2018 19:58:14 +0000 http://seconduse.com/?p=3246403 Looking for storage solutions that won’t crumble when you take them out of their flat packages to assemble (*cough cough* IKEA)? Look no further than Second Use!  You don’t have to compromise functionality or style with these industrial storage solutions perfect for any home on any budget.

Item #617597: Steel Shop Cabinet, $195

This sturdy shop cabinet has 27 drawers ready to store all your tools or knick knacks! With a little clean-up and a fresh coat of paint, this piece would glow with industrial chic charm! We love how the project below enhanced a similar cabinet with a bold color, painting over the existing details.

Item #617365: Low Shop Cabinet, $45

This sturdy plywood cabinet may not look like much, but with a little heavy metal, it could easily be your next entertainment stand! Add some wire locker baskets for extra storage capabilities!

Item #617599: 1950’s Mechanic Locker, $245

The handwritten notes on the doors of this locker dating back to 1953 are enough to make us swoon! We love the idea of using a multiple door locker for both hidden storage and open shelving, like the project below. Not ready to get rid of the visual history on this piece specifically? Find a space on your wall to repurpose the doors as decoration!

Item #612921: Slanted Top Locker, $95

Is it just us, or would this not make the PERFECT broom closet? It’s the perfect height, and is already painted a sweet light green. Store away!

See something you like? Give us a call to put items on a 24 hour hold any day of the week, 9am to 6pm!

DIY: Balusters, Spindles and Furniture Feet Galore! https://www.seconduse.com/2017/11/diy-balusters-spindles-and-furniture-feet-galore/ Mon, 06 Nov 2017 19:36:40 +0000 http://seconduse.com/?p=3212699 We recently received a bunch of balusters, furniture feet, and turned wood posts in our SODO store. While these guys are used to holding up handrail and protecting your dog from jumping off the porch, they are super versatile and ripe for repurpose! Below are some projects utilising this simple material in some really stellar ways. Come check out our selection of balusters/spindles/stair sticks and more in person 9AM-6PM any day of the week at our Seattle SODO location, and browse online anytime!

Farmhouse Table Legs

While this latest batch of turned wood architectural goods includes some arguably snazzy and convenient plug-and-play table legs, it’s worth mentioning that balusters also make a fine substitution. They are inexpensive, easily cut to any height, and available in a wide range of profiles to match any style, making them popular choices for console and end tables. Looking for a heavier duty solution? Use newel posts instead- their wider diameter provides greater stability and lends a classic farmhouse aesthetic. Check out a tutorial to build your own here.

Rustic Table Lamps

These shapely lamps show off the lovely turned wood detailing on the balusters they’re made from. You can achieve a similar look on our raw wood balusters by staining or painting them a dark color, painting over with a lighter color of paint, and sanding down in places to distress. Hot tip: our Metro Paint in “Seashell” would work great for this! Also, how sweet would Edison Bulbs look with these?

Candelabra

This candelabra made from cut-off balusters is so charming and would be super easy to make! Just cut pieces to a couple varying lengths, drill inch-wide holes partway down, and affix them all to a central piece of wood. Paint/stain them however you wish and voila! A thanksgiving centerpiece the relatives will swoon over. These would also look lovely as individual candlesticks, and would make great gifts!

Spool Stands

There’s a great step-by-step DIY for this innovative project here, and we love the crystal knobs as toppers. We’ve got tons of fun vintage hardware that could serve a similar purpose!

Headboard

We’ve got a bunch of balusters that all match, and this headboard project is an awesome way to show off the matching turned details. The newell posts on the ends frame the headboard nicely, and this project can obviously be painted any way you like! You can find a great DIY for this project here.

The Photos You Need To Make it Through Another Hump Day https://www.seconduse.com/2017/09/the-photos-you-need-to-make-it-through-another-hump-day/ Wed, 27 Sep 2017 20:18:50 +0000 http://seconduse.com/?p=3205717 There are too many reasons to name to shop at Second Use, but with 6,000 inventory items you can browse from home, that’s a good sized dent in the countdown. As for other good reasons, there are the 3,300 tons of waste we diverted from the landfill in the last year alone, or the $2.5 million dollars we have contributed to Habitat for Humanity since 1997. But today, we’re excited to unveil a new feature: kittens.

Meet Zaddy. Zaddy is a 6-week old kitten that has been making trips to visit the Second Use staff as it is weaned from it’s mom.

Zaddy’s forever home will be with Emma, who is part of our Yard Crew.

But until that day comes, we’re all enjoying Zaddy’s visits.

Zaddy came to us by way of a Second Use regular.

And while we love all of our customers, we are pretty appreciative of this one.

I mean look at that face!

And its little paws!

Some would argue Zaddy is *too cute* to handle.

And we agreed, until our customer brought in Zaddy’s sibling for a visit. Now we have *two* kittens in our salvage fortress.

Not a cat person? Not even a kitten person? That’s alright, we have some pretty cute salvage too.

Like this fancy faux frame!

And this sweet baby fan.

I mean who doesn’t need a multicolor dazzler?

Or this roomy Second Use tote?

Just think of the *cute* memories you’re missing without this badminton net and posts!

Or what a rare opportunity it is to purchase a working Zenith Wave Magnet Radio!

This cute custom light fixture is sure to get some “wows!”

But why choose between “wows” and “meows” when you can get both at Second Use! Happy Wednesday y’all!

Inspiration Gallery: Theater Seats https://www.seconduse.com/2017/07/inspiration-gallery-theater-seats/ Mon, 31 Jul 2017 21:21:11 +0000 http://seconduse.com/?p=3196221 Whether you’re looking to create an all-out salvaged home theater or accent your space with small-footprint seating, theater seats are a unique item with endless re-use possibilities. We’ve got lots of them, and they’re on SALE!

Check out these sweet projects, and come see our selection of theater seats in person in our Seattle store! You can also browse anytime online at seconduse.com

Individual Theater Seats: 519805, $15 each.

These seats from a theater in Fremont may not have the most exciting upholstery right now, but with a little creativity and some exciting textiles, they could take on new life as living room seating in a snap! We love this knitted update to similar seats.

Four Red Upholstered Theater Seats: 522455, $145 for the row.

For another take on re-upholstered seats, try mixing up prints and patterns to create a unique look perfect for a small home theater setup! This graphic approach is giving us goosebumps in the best way!

Set of Six Vintage Wood and Iron Theater Seats: 498857, $125 for the row.

These beautiful bare wood and iron seats need some work to shine, but with a little elbow grease and some fresh veneer, they would make stunning entryway or mudroom seating. We love these charming pairings of similar seats, which add warmth and personality to the spaces they’re in.

Set of Three Masonic Lodge Theater Seats: 508289, $145 for the row.

For theater seats that fold up when not in use, we love the idea of accenting the bottoms of the seats with something visually appealing, like fabric or coated paper. These green velvet seats salvaged from a masonic lodge would look amazing with some bold prints or colors on their undersides!

Last but not least, we currently have this super swanky, custom built Deco cabinet – complete with electrical already installed.  Remove or reorient the shelves to create a unique (and really cool) entertainment center to complete your home theater!

Built-In Deco Cabinet: 539335, $145.

Don’t forget – if you see anything you’re interested in incorporating into your next project, call in to place up to 10 items on hold until 5:30p the following day so you can come check them out in person.

If you have your own project you would like us to feature, email us a few photos and a description at: maryanne@seconduse.com

Featured Inventory: The Harvard Exit Lighting https://www.seconduse.com/2017/07/featured-inventory-the-harvard-exit-lighting/ Mon, 10 Jul 2017 17:32:14 +0000 http://seconduse.com/?p=3192441 As Seattle continues to grow and evolve, residents have become all too familiar with the shuttering of cultural emblems and historic spaces in the area. In 2015, the city let out a collective sigh as the Harvard Exit joined the ranking of beloved venues that would be no more. After a 46 year run as a movie theater (and 44 as a clubhouse for The Women’s Century Club), the Harvard Exit went dark in early 2015 and is currently being remodeled into a mixed-use dining/bar/creative space according to developer Scott Shapiro.

Fortunately, a selection of artifacts from the original interior made their way to Second Use and allow the legacy of the Harvard Exit to persevere in the hands of the public. Our in-house Lighting Designer Anne Kohl recently completed the restoration of several lights from the space that are available at our Seattle location. [Update: as of Monday, July 10th, only the pendant lights remain]

Below, you can enjoy a preview of the lights as well as any history we managed to gather.

Harvard Exit Pendant Light: Beautiful ceiling pendant light with original antique brass and navy blue paint, and hand blown glass cylinder.  The light is original to the building that opened in 1925 as the Women’s Century Club. Restored in-house.

Harvard Exit Wall Sconce [SOLD]: Stunning double wall sconce with original antique brass and navy blue paint with glass tulip shades. Shades are not original, but fit well. This sconce was most likely made by the Gil Glass lighting company. Original to the building; restored in-house.

Harvard Exit Flush Mount Light [SOLD]: A white 14″ schoolhouse globe hangs from a flush mount base with its original antique brass and navy blue paint. There are no guts in this light, but could easily be mounted directly over a single bulb porcelain ceiling mount socket (shown in photo). The light is original to the building that opened in 1925 as the Women’s Century Club. Restored in-house.
