Customer Project: Door Upgrade

It’s no secret that changing the exterior appearance of a house can make it look and feel brand new! Second Use customer Rachel gave her house a gorgeous update using two doors from Second Use, and the results are stunning!

Before:

Rachel’s grey brick home mid- paint job, with the old doors still installed.

Here’s a look at the old doors Rachel took out:

And the ones she got from Second Use, stained and ready to be installed!

After:

Rachel updated the exterior of her brick home with a fresh, modern coat of white paint, which pairs beautifully with her salvaged glowing fir doors from Second Use! Rachel replaced both the front and garage doors.

Beautiful work, Rachel! Thanks for sharing!

Second Use Customer Walker L. recently stopped by the Seattle store in search of some live edge lumber for a fireplace mantel, and we are stunned by how great the resulting project came out! Check out Walter’s project below:

Before:

Walker’s tiled fireplace was looking a little stuck in the past. Our resident wood expert Nils helped him find the perfect slab of live edge to turn this spot into a cozy entertainment corner!

Customer Project: Creative Seating

We always have lots of seating options available in stock, but Second Use customer Shannon W. took salvaged seating to the next level with these projects. Using materials found at 2U, Shannon created two seating masterpieces that will challenge your notion of just what it is a chair should look like. Check them out below!

Suitcase Chair

Using a vintage suitcase and some burly furniture legs, Shannon created this luxury luggage seating. Check out the tripod light behind the chair, made from an army surveyor’s tripod and Navy signaling lamp!

Wine Barrel Chair

This is the perfect chair for sitting down at the end of a long week and enjoying a glass of whatever!

Customer Project: Stained Glass Window

Second Use customer William Q. found a stained glass window at our Seattle store that fit perfectly into a small bathroom addition he was making to his house! Stained glass is an exceptionally versatile material perfect for spots where you want to let light through while maintaining privacy.

Customer Project Submission: Foundry Pattern Coat Rack

Second Use Customer Carma Gael created this striking coat rack and shelf from a foundry pattern they purchased at the Second Use store. Although they were originally looking for a worn piece of wood to give the coat rack an industrial feel, they “knew they were on to something” when they stumbled across the wealth of foundry patterns at the store.

In addition to liking the color, wear, hand printed “S,” and metal placard on the piece, it resonated with a piece of personal history. Their grandfather worked at a foundry as a Master Pattern Maker, a position that is now scarce. They describe him as the kind of guy that could “make or improve anything,” a 75 year member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union, and an impressive 104 years old when he passed away last year.

Below, Carma gives you a quick run down of the materials they used, and the time and financial investment it would take you to make something similar:

Materials Used: Foundry pattern, 7 cup hooks, 7 hook & eye turnbuckles, 2 nautical rope hooks, and 2 french cleats to affix the piece to the wall

Project Time: It took about 3 hours.

Material Cost: The foundry pattern + $95.00.

Any tips for working with the material? Drill pilot holes to avoid cracking.
