Artisan Pop Up #6: Scott Connell of Salvage & Spruce https://www.seconduse.com/2019/06/artisan-pop-up-6-scott-connell-of-salvage-spruce/ Fri, 07 Jun 2019 19:59:52 +0000 http://seconduse.com/?p=3302227

Second Use invites you to join us Saturday, June 8th for our 6th Artisan Pop Up from 4-6 at our Seattle store. We are proud to showcase the work of local craftsman Scott Connell of Salvage and Spruce, a one-man shop located in Ballard.

He will be selling an assortment of furniture and home decor made from reclaimed wood and salvaged industrial items. Almost everything he makes is one of a kind, as he often lets the material dictate the project.

A self taught woodworker, Connell got his start when he delved into doing his own home renovation. After the renovation, he realized he still had the tools and was burnt out on his corporate career. The notion of creating something tangible inspired him- so he left his job and started his furniture business- a decision that has fared well for him.

“It’s incredibly satisfying to look at a completed piece and are able to say…yep, I made that,” Connell explains.

From the beginning, Connell has enjoyed working with reclaimed material.

“Shiny new furniture is perfectly fine but I like things with a bit of patina. I also firmly believe in the concept of taking something that has already served a very useful life in some other application and giving it new life as a beautiful piece of furniture or home decor. One other fun aspect of working with reclaimed material is that you get to solve unique challenges in order to make things work; it keeps the process interesting,” he said.

Check out his work in person all month long at Second Use as well as frequent stockists Epic Antique in SODO and Haystack Antique Bellevue.

Looking for a custom piece? He works with a local metal fabricator to create pieces that combine wood and steel and is currently accepting commissions!

A long time friend of Second Use, Marisol makes furniture with salvaged materials that she collects from job sites, garage sales, and Second Use. Her love for iron work began after watching her grandfather, a blacksmith, create beautiful railings, gates, and arches by hand. She believes that art makes us better humans and creates work because she enjoys the process and likes to craft something she can share with others. Her use of second hand materials allows her to be constantly learning and creating a connection between her imagination and creativity.

Artisan Pop Up #3: Nils Rye of Rye Craft and Second Use https://www.seconduse.com/2019/03/artisan-pop-up-3-nils-rye-of-rye-craft-and-second-use/ Mon, 04 Mar 2019 20:31:25 +0000 http://seconduse.com/?p=3287738

Second Use invites you to join us for the opening our March Artisan Pop Up featuring the work of craftsman Nils Rye of Rye Craft on Saturday, March 9 from 4-6 at our Seattle store!

Nils Rye is a local craftsman and Second Use’s “Wood Specialist.” Using his knowledge and passion for wood, he works with local suppliers to curate our unique selection of lumber. But his handling of salvaged lumber is not restrained to the our inventory- outside of work, he consistently incorporates reclaimed wood into his own projects.

“Wood and steel get great beauty from the passage of time that cannot be replicated, and a good builder finds a way to accent that,” he describes.

Nils started his fine wood crafting while living in Japan making bespoke wood surfboards and fins, but the craft has always been in his blood. His father is a hobbiest luthier (guitar builder) and former shop teacher. He grew up with him building the cabinetry and other furniture around the home.

While overseas, Nils also taught woodworking at Sasebo Naval Base. After returning to the Seattle area he began to shift his focus to furnishings that combine rare and unique woods with repurposed materials, proving that environmentally conscious living can produce a beauty all it’s own.

Relish in this beauty up close at the opening for first dibs and the opportunity to meet the artisan! Items will be listed in our online inventory the following day.

Second Use invites you to join us for the opening our February Artisan Pop Up featuring the work of craftsman Eric Holder of Slab Art Wood Studio on Saturday, February 16th  from 4-6 PM at our Seattle store.

Work will be available at Second Use for the duration of the month while supplies last. Join us for the opening for first dibs and the opportunity to meet the artist!

IN CASE OF SNOW: In the event of snow, this event may be postponed until the following week, but items will be available in store and on www.seconduse.com as soon as regular business hours resume.

About The Artisan:
“I’ve always been a maker, creating intricate plane models at age 12. I also grew up in Japan (Navy brat), where I was fascinated by the woodworking and the general sense of beauty there. I started woodworking as an apprentice cabinet maker and finally took the plunge of founding Slab Art Wood Studio in 2007. My design work enables me to use Japanese elements, including wabi-sabi (valuing the imperfect/old); salvaging trees and working with wood keeps me close to nature. I have 12+ years experience selling my work, both finished pieces and custom: in person (at studio) and also via the website and social media.” – Eric Holder
