Haunt your home with salvaged scares for an authentically terrifying Halloween!

1. Item #655777: The Second Use Chainsaw Massacre

At only $20, this guy is ready to be smothered with fake blood and placed in a creepy (but safe and out of children’s reach) spot. Trick-or-treaters beware!

2. Item #656675: Justice is Served

What’s heavier, a human skull or a bucket of candy? We’ll let this scale decide.

3. Item #652185: Witch’s Brew

This massive cauldron is as authentic as it is heavy (which is to say, VERY). When you’re done using it to scare neighbors, it’ll make a great planter, baby bath, etc.

4+5. Items #634983 + #656287: Headless Horsemen (or Zombies, or Ghosts…)

Nothing says “Halloween decor” like a fake body dressed to impress (or frighten). Bury halfway in your yard, separate into pieces, use later in the year as Santa’s elves, the possibilities are endless.

*Wishing you the spookiest and most mischievous of Halloweens*

Featured Inventory: Plaster Flourishes from the Fox Theater https://www.seconduse.com/2018/05/featured-inventory-plaster-flourishes-from-the-fox-theater/ Wed, 23 May 2018 16:45:35 +0000 http://seconduse.com/?p=3245093

Opened just months before the 1929 stock market crash, Seattle’s Fox Theatre was cursed with a series of misfortunes from the beginning, despite being praised for its “fairy like appearance.”

Amid much debate, it was demolished in 1992, but pieces of it, perhaps by magic or the goodwill of early salvagers, continue to appear at our store.

Check out the incredible selection of columns, corbels, creatures, and flourishes, available now in our Seattle store:http://seconduse.com/inventory/job/?jobID=518J3161

Make A Statement With Oversized Lighting https://www.seconduse.com/2018/03/make-a-statement-with-oversized-lighting/ Thu, 08 Mar 2018 19:30:14 +0000 http://seconduse.com/?p=3230602 If you’re looking for a statement piece to set off a room, look no further than oversized lighting. Especially if you have high ceilings, large lights are a great way to draw focus in a room upwards, and while they may take up more space, they often end up making a space feel bigger. We have a couple of incredible mid-century and brutalist fixtures in stock right now, that are just waiting to be a conversation starter in your home! These lights came from two different churches, both built in the 1960s, and they’re full to the brim with midcentury charm. Check them out below, along with some statement light inspiration that’s got us swooning!

Item #595443 (and matching): Midcentury Brutalist Light Fixture

This brutalist light, manufactured by The Harry C. Lynde Co. of Seattle, is made from flexible strips of solid bronze with a single bulb holophane inner shade and bullseye bottom. It was salvaged from early 60’s built United Methodist Church in Everett. At 31″, the shade alone makes for a sizable statement light. The shaft, measuring 91,” can be easily cut shorter, or keep it long to hang in your 20′ ceiling grand entryway.

Item #573565 (and matching): Midcentury Cone Pendant Light

These lights were designed and built in the mid-century for use in a church sanctuary. Built with a lot of aluminum, they are light weight for their size. Originally, the conduit was directly attached to a mounting bracket in the ceiling, but a new mounting system will have to be designed. The top piece of conduit can easily be unscrewed and replaced. Make a statement with one hanging in your entryway, or create a tranquil space with a few hanging from a lofty ceiling.

Check out these examples of statement lighting in different rooms of the home:

Over a kitchen island, these lights promise lots of light and the placement ensures that their height isn’t an issue!

Similarly, oversize lights over a dining table bring focus to that part of the room, and help to create division of space in an open layout like this room.

We love this light in a pitched ceiling! Where the slanted walls stand to make the space feel smaller, the light actually creates some space.

Don’t forget you can call us at 206-763-6929 and place items on hold if you’d like to take a look at them in person! Our store hours are 9Am-6PM every day of the week. Browse online anytime at www.seconduse.com/inventory

2013 1939 Seattle Symphony Program https://www.seconduse.com/2015/03/2013-1939-seattle-symphony-program/ Mon, 16 Mar 2015 22:10:44 +0000 http://seconduse.com.s167170.gridserver.com/?p=899 When an area junk hauler and regular Second Use supplier dropped off a cabinet with the Receiving Crew, he pointed out an unusual find. One of his jobs was in the home of a former Seattle Symphony Orchestra violinist. In her cabinet, he found a Seattle Symphony Orchestra program from Jan. 23, 1939. “When you stop and think about it, the likelihood of a program from another century surviving is pretty remarkable,” says Second Use co-owner and Receiving Crew member Michael Armstrong. “Especially because it was only meant to last one evening.”

The yellowing pages from the program boast ads for clothing, real estate, produce, mortgages and whisky. One ad is for the Seattle Milk Fund, a dietary aid organization for needy families. According to the ad, in 1937, the Seattle Milk Fund distributed 31,061 quarts of milk, 528 dozen eggs, and 1,775 loaves of bread to hungry families.

Though the symphony program is almost 75 years old, some things never change. In the back of the program is a note from a symphony head, saying that the Seattle Symphony Orchestra has had to shrink, as a result of tough financial times. Also, the classical music remains consistent throughout time. The evening performance on Jan. 23, 1939 included “Symphony No. 5 in E Minor” by Tchaikovsky and “Tristan and Isolde” by Wagner.

These kinds of pieces get the imagination going for Second Use staff. “You’re transported back to 1939,” Armstrong says. “I like to imagine people in fancy dresses and tuxedos, drinking martinis, standing in a beautiful building.”

2011 Some Second Use Stocking Stuffers https://www.seconduse.com/2015/03/2011-some-second-use-stocking-stuffers/ Mon, 16 Mar 2015 17:41:30 +0000 http://seconduse.com.s167170.gridserver.com/?p=782 Sure, you can’t exactly stuff granite or a paneled door into a stocking. However, if you think outside of the box, you might be able to find a few Second Use items to stuff those stockings. Here are some ideas:

  • Glass door knobs, just because a friend on Facebook told us when she was younger, she used to think they were giant diamonds
  • Glass or brass door knobs, to be made into ornaments
  • Chandelier crystals, to be made into earrings or other jewelry
  • Second Use gift cards
  • Second Use t-shirts
  • Knob wine stoppers, like this one
  • Skelton keys, for jewelry or just because they’re cool
  • Escutcheons, for bracelets
  • An assortment of knobs, for a person to assemble a coat rack
  • Numbers (from the house number drawer) that may have special meaning for the person receiving the gift

Got any ideas? Send them to elena@seconduse.dev.
