Join us for a demonstration on the basics of refinishing wood, with an eye towards working on home repair and furniture. We’ll start out by discussing how to remove existing finishes from wood items, and discuss ways to make small repairs of damaged areas. We’ll also discuss best practices for applying finishes, with a focus on environmentally-friendly and human-healthy products. Workshop participants will not be doing any hands-on work, but Kelsey will have several examples and provide some live demonstration of the concepts she discusses.

Kelsey is a DIYer with a lot of knowledge from her many completed projects, she and her spouse are proud owners of a 1929 storybook Tudor house in Seattle. She is continually working on keeping her home historic, functional, and cute. She also enjoys refinishing wood furniture, bringing back to life older items that just need a little work to shine again! She also happens to be an amazing illustrator.

In this workshop you will take a pre-leveled and planed charcuterie board blank and create a finished board, ready to use or gift. There will be a selection of boards to choose from, and you will receive a $20 credit to use towards the purchase of a board. Typical cost range is $20-$45.

We will provide live instruction as well as tools, sanders, sandpaper, and finishing oil.

You should bring with you a pair of work/gardening gloves, eye protection if you have it (we’ll have some available for those that do not), and you should wear clothing that you can work in and get dirty.

We will be working with hardwoods, including walnut wood. If you are sensitive to wood dust, please bring a respirator. If you are allergic to walnut or other hardwoods, please refrain from attending this class.

Reglazing a Wood Window Workshop

This information session is perfect if you want to learn more about how to ID some common wood types, why you would work with them, and will provide some great info on what to look for when you are shopping for wood materials to create with.

This workshop will be taught by Second Use’s own Wood Specialist, Nils Rye, who handcrafts all kinds of cool things with wood when he’s not here working to provide our customers with the best reclaimed & sustainable wood selection in the city.

Join us for a discussion of innovative and efficient heating solutions for small and multi-use spaces that tread lightly on the planet. We will look at backyard cottages, ADUs, additions, and whole homes. We’ll also discuss hybrid heating solutions that are super comfortable and healthy, while also saving space, are less expensive to install, and have minimal impact on the environment!

Laura Elfline of Mighty Energy Solutions and Mighty House Construction will lend her expertise in both radiant heat solutions, and home remodeling and construction. Bring your burning questions about heat!

This workshop is absolutely FREE, will be held at our Seattle store, and will teach you how to assess which tool is the right tool, how to plan your tool use, what safety considerations to be aware of, and how to troubleshoot potential problems. There will be a short presentation, followed by a live demonstrations of popular power tools, a conversation on where to find them, and we will leave some time for a Q+A.

This will be an in-person workshop. This workshop will be held in a sheltered space that is open to the outdoor elements and airflow. You will be required to wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth during the presentation and in our stores. This workshop is currently full. We’re hosting a free, live, virtual, Ask The Expert Q&A session to answer all your burning questions. Join Doug Elfline of Mighty House Construction, where you will be able ask him your questions about using salvaged building materials. Doug has decades of experience building and remodeling and has always incorporated reuse into his work. You can send us your questions ahead of time by including your question in the RSVP to give Doug a head start on topics! We plan to answer questions for at least an hour, and can stick around for another half hour if the discussion is still lively!
